Scribes were highly respected during this time. They recorded important data for government and religious leaders.
To be in the scribe community, you had to go through school. Some classes went from dawn to sunset. During school, scribes had to learn how to write over 700 hieroglyphics. A scribe could come from any social class, which gave some people of lower classes a chance to move up the ranks.
Scribes were taught how to write hieroglyphs on wood, pottery, stone, and papyrus.
Learning to be a scribe was not easy. It mean hard work all day and harsh treatment, such as beatings, this punishment was very common. They were known to be Egypt's official writers. They also were used to write records on trading, importing, and exporting items and grains.
